Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance

Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance is one of the few mandatory insurances in Germany. It protects you from damages you cause others while driving.

Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance

What is it?

Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance covers personal injuries and property damages for which you, as the operator of a motor vehicle, are responsible. However, it does not cover damages to your own vehicle.

Taking out Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance is mandatory in Germany. This ensures that someone who suffers damages is adequately compensated – in the case of personal injury this can involve multi-million sums.

There are hundreds of providers of Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance, resulting in a broad range of premiums and benefits. However, insurance providers are required to follow particular legal provisions. For vehicles with fewer than 11 seats the minimum amounts covered are as follows:

  • Personal injury: 7.5 Million Euros
  • Property damages: 1.12 Million Euros
  • Financial loss: 50,000 Euros

What are the benefits?

When you issue an insurance claim to your provider, the next question is whether you have taken out partially comprehensive or comprehensive insurance in addition to your liability insurance.

Partially comprehensive insurance covers

  • Broken or cracked glass
  • Damage from fire, lightning or explosion
  • Collisions with wild animals
  • Theft of the vehicle or parts of it, and break-in attempts
  • Damage from storms, hail and floods

Most insurance providers offer the option to expand the partially comprehensive plan with additional coverage. For example, damages caused by rodents can be covered additionally.

Comprehensive insurance usually includes all coverage from its partially comprehensive counterpart. Additionally, it protects you from

  • Collision damages caused by yourself
  • Vandalism
  • Damages caused by insolvent or uninsured parties
  • Damages caused by animals not included in the partially comprehensive plan

Note: In cases involving gross negligence, such as inebriation, hit-and-runs, or operating a vehicle that is not roadworthy, an insurance provider may refuse payment.

Who is it for?

The question which insurance to take out is an important one and there is no cookie-cutter answer. It depends on factors such as the value of your vehicle, your no-claims bonus, the required coverage as well as your financial security.

If you own an especially new and valuable car, comprehensive insurance is possibly the best option. Even when financing your car, the comprehensive insurance may cover all future payments in case of a write-off situation. A deciding factor in favour of taking out comprehensive insurance is the no-claims bonus. Once you reach multiple years of accident-free driving without making any insurance claims the premiums can decrease significantly. Partly comprehensive insurance, however, does not take into account the no-claims bonus.

Partly comprehensive insurance is usually recommended for novice drivers who drive a relatively modestly priced car.

Conclusion

Which insurance type you need for your vehicle should be considered carefully and also take into account your personal situation. It’s furthermore important to consider a potential deductible.
