Personal liability Insurance

The personal liability insurance is one of the most common insurances in Germany – approximately 2/3 of Germans have a personal liability plan.

The reason why is simple: By law, every person is liable for caused damages to another person (including that person’s property and immaterial assets) and has to pay to make up for these damages – if necessary, with his or her entire assets and until the rest of their life.

In the normal cause of life damages happen: you trip and knock over your friend’s tv or simply break an expensive piece of furniture by accident. Especially if bodily injuries come into play can the costs quickly turn from uncomfortable to existence-threatening.

Because you are liable in almost every daily situation, even if unintentional and without deliberateness, a personal liability insurance is almost always recommended. Especially since the common insurances are very cheap (starting from 60€/year) and enable you avert many risks with little costs.

Pension plans

If you are a regular employee in Germany a big part of the taxes you pay goes to the public pension plan. Out of that plan, your pension will be paid once you hit retirement age and one aspect that everybody agrees upon is: it will not be enough.

The public pension is around 40% of your regular income before taxes – if the system stays at it is and not too many retirees enter the system. But the population is getting older and fewer people have to pay for more retirees so that the pension you will ultimately receive from the state will probably be significantly less than today.

To counter that, the German government has acknowledged a range of private pension plans and products that are eligible for tax deductions or subsidies. These plans are open for every citizen living and working in Germany and are strongly recommended by the German government, NGOs and insurers alike.

Saving for the future should not compromise living today and has to fit your needs and requirements over many years. We can help you to find a solution that fulfils the complex set of requirements that are represented by pension plans.

The daily work and income represents the financial foundation for the vast majority of people – but what happens if you are suddenly not able to work anymore? The public “benefits for reduction in earning capacity” (Erwerbsminderungsrente) that regular employees may be eligible for rarely enables people to keep their standard of living, especially if the main earner cannot work anymore.

The German NGO Bund der Versicherten (union of insured people) recommends every employee to have a disability insurance yet many decide against it. The main reasons are that many think it will be very expensive and the common thought of “nothing will happen to me” prevails. But especially in disability insurances the early (= younger) bird catches the worm!

A personal and precise consultation is paramount when it comes to disability insurances because many factors have to be taken into consideration. With your needs and requirements at the centre, supported by specialised software and our experience, we can help you make an informed and optimal decision.

Law books
Legal protection insurance

Every business has either direct or indirect customer contact on a regular basis. A disagreement can quickly turn into a legal dispute and that can cause high costs in the form of lawyer fees, court fees, litigation costs, etc..

In order for these costs not to present a big financial burden and maybe more importantly, in order for everyone to be able to get a fair chance in court regardless of his or her finances, there are legal protection insurances.

Benefits of these plans range from a free first consultation with a lawyer, legal counselling and mitigation to coverage of litigation costs and full-blown representation in court.

The scope of these kinds of insurances heavily depends on your requirements, not every employer needs the whole spectrum. We can help you choose the best fit for your legal protection.

Life carries many risks – running a business increases those risks. Depending on your occupation, risks for your personal assets can be very high but at the same time fear of making mistakes should not paralyse your business.

It is not just your own actions that pose risks, your employees, vehicles, buildings and much more have to be taken into account as well. Similar to the personal liability, you can be liable for damages without any fault of yours or intent. Especially occupations that involve consultative activities can lead to claims that can cause financial ruin.

The crucial factors are the nature of your occupation and the scope of insurance you want – a notary has profoundly different needs than a mechanic. We will help you find the best protection for your individual needs.

Company pension schemes

Company pension schemes are one of the 3 “layers of the German pension system” and they have an enormous impact on stabilising pensions.

Company pension schemes are equally complex as pension plans for individuals and come in many forms. The correct choice not only benefits employees but also employers in the form of lower wage labour costs and a decisive competitive advantage regarding the battle for talented employees.

Regardless of whether you are a small retailer or craftsman or a big tech company or hotel chain, we can help you make the best decision for your business and your employees.

Health insurance

Health insurance in Germany literally accompanies you your entire life and yet it often gets neglected – until it is needed. That regularly leads to a bad awakening because of procedures that are not covered or high co-payments.

Whether private or public, health insurance as a mandatory insurance represents a central pillar of the German social state. It guarantees everyone adequate health care and tries to compensate things such as a temporary loss of the ability to work.

However, with more than 150 insurers in Germany alone, often vastly different focuses and plans one can safely say that the health insurance market can be confusing. A thorough analysis can very often lead to less costs and/or better benefits. Especially freelancers have many options with extensive differences.

For most freelancers their daily work represents their only source of income – but what to do if you cannot work anymore? Freelancers are not eligible for the public disability scheme and more often than not there are no assets available to live off.

The German NGO Bund der Versicherten (union of insured people) recommends every employee to have a disability insurance and that is even more important for freelancers. The main reasons why freelancers do not purchase a disability plan are that many think it will be very expensive and the common thought of “nothing will happen to me” prevails. But especially in disability insurances the early (= younger) bird catches the worm!

Health insurance in Germany is one the major mandatory insurances and represents a central pillar of the German social state. Every person living in Germany needs to have a health insurance plan that fulfils certain minimum requirements.

As an expatriate, whether you are from the EU or not, getting health insurance or changing your plan can quickly get complicated and bureaucratic. There are forms to fill out, usually only in German, information needs to be translated and acknowledged in order to get health insurance.

Most of the time you need to prove that you have health insurance that is acknowledged by the German authorities and German insurers are usually simply not used to handling expats and often refuse to service them properly.

We work with experienced expat consultants, partners that have specialised in expats and have more than 25 years of experience handling insurances for expats in Germany. We know the obstacles of German bureaucracy and can help you get over them.
